Prime Minister Kristen Michal hosted the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) Leaders' Summit on December 16–17, 2024, bringing together leaders from ten countries to discuss cooperation within the JEF framework and plan responses to the evolving security environment. The JEF is a UK-led defense cooperation format that includes Estonia, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland. The purpose of the JEF is to act as a first responder before NATO’s Article 5 is invoked. It consists of like-minded countries ready to contribute quickly and flexibly to various operations, ranging from humanitarian crises to conventional warfare. Crisis response measures developed within the JEF complement NATO activities.
